The Ferny Creek Literacy Approach

At Ferny Creek Primary School, we are committed to providing a strong foundation in literacy through the Big 6 approach — a research-based model that ensures every child becomes a confident, capable reader and writer.

The Big 6 approach provides a comprehensive literacy framework that supports all learners. It allows for both explicit teaching and authentic, engaging practice through literature, play, inquiry, and targeted small group instruction.

We believe that every child can thrive in literacy when provided with the right support, structure, and opportunities — and the Big 6 gives us the roadmap to make that happen.

The Big 6 Literacy Framework focuses on the six essential components proven to support early and ongoing literacy success:

1. Oral Language

The foundation of all literacy learning. We prioritise speaking and listening activities that build vocabulary, language structure, and communication skills from the earliest years.

2. Phonological Awareness

Children learn to hear and play with the sounds in spoken language — including rhyme, syllables, and individual sounds (phonemes). These skills are essential for learning to read and spell.

3. Phonics

Through explicit instruction, children learn the relationships between letters and sounds. Phonics teaching at our school is systematic, cumulative, and tailored to students’ points of need.

4. Vocabulary

A rich vocabulary supports both comprehension and expression. We embed vocabulary instruction across all areas of learning, using high-quality literature, meaningful conversation, and targeted word work.

5. Fluency

Students develop the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with expression. Fluency is built through regular reading, repeated practice, and listening to good models of reading.

6. Comprehension

The ultimate goal of reading. We teach students to think deeply about texts — to predict, question, connect, and reflect. Comprehension strategies are woven through all reading and writing experiences.
